This is one of the most un-Chinese towns in one of the most Chinese landscapes.
Most tour groups visiting China stay for a few nights in Guilin, while most
backpackers stay in Yangshuo - usually for a few weeks. The tour groups do a trip
along the Li River, land in Yangshuo for a two-hour shopping spree in the souvenir
stalls and this together with the fact that at any given time scores of backpackers
stay there on a semi-permanent basis has given this little sleepy town a very strange
touch indeed.
So... what is everybody doing there?
People usually take long breakfasts and generally take it rather easy. There are good and
very cheap restaurants, a couple of backpacker hotels (yes, there's also an expensive one...)
and - we shouldn't forget this - Yangshuo is surrounded by one of the most fantastic
landscapes you'll ever see.
The peaks
All around Yangshuo there are beautiful limestone peaks that spring up out of the
countryside in a most surprising fashion. If you've ever wondered where those mysterious
landscapes of Chinese paintings are located, search no more. The wonderful thing about
Yangshuo is that you are never more than a hundred meters from the next peak. You can
climb threehundred meter high, steep peaks and look almost directly down at your hotel.
Or rent a bike and just ride out into this dreamlike landscape for several hours.
Just take a look at those pictures...
