What NOT to bring
As always when travelling, don't bring too much stuff. Itīs really no fun to lug
some 40 pounds of luggage around, whereever you go. Busses and trains are always crowded
and sometimes even a medium-sized backpack can be a problem to store, with the possible
exception of on your knees.
There's a lot that you can buy in China and especially clothes are a real bargain.
Even shoes in large sizes aren't a problem in places like Beijing or Shanghai and if
you go for locally manufactured shoes, the money won't be a problem either...
Donīt bring too much clothes to change - there is good, cheap and fast laundry service
in all the hotels youīll end up in.
Hard to find...
...and a lot easier to bring (in no particular order):
- medical and hygiene supplies
- extra pair of glasses or contact lenses
- visa photos
- additional picture ID for bike rentals, etc.
- slide film
- special camera batteries
- padlock or cable lock for rented bikes, luggage in trains...
- alarm clock
- good pocket knife
- postcards from your hometown as gifts
- small shortwave radio for international news (can actually be bought in China - good prices)
- guide book
- phrase book (no dictionaries - buy those in China)
...to be continued...
