Travel in Style
For me it is one of the highlights of travelling in China - taking a boat across
the South China Sea or the Yellow Sea. Arriving in Shanghai by boat is certainly
the most stylish way to get there.
Where else do you still have a chance to get a passage on a regular passenger
boat? I very much recommend the trip Hong Kong - Shanghai since those boats are
the best thing on Chinese waters. But also Shanghai - Qingdao and the boats to Hainan Island
are trips that are well worth the money. As on the Yangzi Boats, itīs worth to spend
a little extra for second class tickets. Itīs cheap enough and the third- or fourth-class
dormitories are not that much fun.
Ticketing
Tickets can be bought at the local CITS office (CTS in Hong Kong).
Prices are higher than for most other forms of travel in China. But you have
to consider that youīll get free accomodation for a couple of days and on some
boats (Hong Kong - Shanghai for instance) also free meals.
