Route Six
Beijing - Xi'an - Lanzhou - Dunhuang - Beijing
This is more of a rough sketch than a real trip. It can be done in the way it
is described here, but consider it more as a springboard to the west of
China
The trip includes the Terracotta Warrior Army in Xi'an and also the caves of
Dunhuang, two of the great historic treasures of China.
The trip can be done in about 30 days, by train and/or plane, with minimal
advance bookings. There are some rather adventurous options to be considered,
like going on to Ürümqi and on from there into Kazakhstan or you could
go to Kashgar and on from there via the Karakoram Highway into Pakistan.
You could also take a bus from Dunhuang to Golmud (15 hours) and then another
bus to Lhasa in Tibet (30+ hours). If you want to do this, come
prepared! This is serious stuff and not something to decide on in the
train to Lanzhou.
