Route Four
Hong Kong - Yangshuo - Kunming - Chengdu
This is the grand tour of southern/central China that allows for all modes of
travel. In the southwest you have chances to see some of the minorities of China
and if you have more time, Kunming and Chengdu are both good starting points for
further exploration of the area from the border of Vietnam up to Tibet.
The trip can be done in about 40 days, by train, bus and boat, with minimal
advance bookings. Depending on how much you (dis)like train travel, some parts can easily
be done by plane (Kunming-Chengdu for instance).
The Chengdu-Shanghai stretch can be varied by going to Chongqing by train and
taking a Yangzi-boat from there to Wuhan or straight through to Shanghai.
Have some spare time at the end of the trip in case you miss
one of the boat connections on the way...
