Route Four

Hong Kong - Yangshuo - Kunming - Chengdu

This is the grand tour of southern/central China that allows for all modes of travel. In the southwest you have chances to see some of the minorities of China and if you have more time, Kunming and Chengdu are both good starting points for further exploration of the area from the border of Vietnam up to Tibet.

The trip can be done in about 40 days, by train, bus and boat, with minimal advance bookings. Depending on how much you (dis)like train travel, some parts can easily be done by plane (Kunming-Chengdu for instance).

The Chengdu-Shanghai stretch can be varied by going to Chongqing by train and taking a Yangzi-boat from there to Wuhan or straight through to Shanghai.

Have some spare time at the end of the trip in case you miss one of the boat connections on the way...

Here's a rough itinerary:

Hong Kong 5 days
2 day boat / bus combination
or
2 day bus ride
Yangshuo 4 days
30 hour trainride
Kunming 4 days
24 hour trainride
Chengdu 4 days
30 hour trainride
Wuhan 2 days
48 hour boat trip on the Yangzi
Shanghai 5 days
3 day boat trip on the South China Sea
Hong Kong 3 days
