Route Three
Hong Kong - Shanghai - Qingdao - Beijing
This is a seldom travelled route up along the east coast of China. It doesn't
show much of ancient China, but is the thing to do for those interested
in the era of colonization by the western powers or those hopeless romantics
who want to cross the Yellow Sea on a regular passenger liner sixty years
too late...
The trip can be done in about 25 days, mostly by boat, with minimal
advance bookings.
Itīs easily possible to add some destinations in Shandong province, like Qufu,
the birthplace of Confucius, or Taishan, one of the five sacred mountains of China.
Those places can be reached from Qingdao by train or bus. Add about three to four
travel days for each of those destinations.
Have some spare time at the end of the trip in case you miss
one of the boat connections on the way...
