"No advance bookings? How do I get a trainticket?"

First of all you have to know that in most places you have to wait between one and three days for a sleeper ticket. So organize your ticket soon, if possible on the same day you arrive in town.

At the station... Sounds obvious, doesn't it? The problem is that about a thousand people are there with you to buy a ticket for the same train. And in most stations you have to know some Chinese to get a ticket.
There are cases like the Beijing railway station where you have to buy your tickets at the station. Those stations have special offices or ticket windows where there is usually somebody who speaks English.

At CITS... In some cities you can buy train tickets at the CITS office for an additional charge. This can be either a very good way to avoid a lot of hassle or it is the last place on earth you will actually get a train ticket. It's worth asking other travelers about their experiences there. There are CITS offices that really can't sell you train tickets.

At the hotel... A lot of hotels - even smaller ones - offer travel services like organizing tickets. Sometimes they don't even charge you for it, so it's certainly worth to ask. Around the usual backpacker places there are also often people who will organize tickets for you for a small charge.
