All the Cities - is that all?
Touring the cities
Travelling in China is for the most part touring the cities. If you want to get
"away from it all", then China is probably not what you are looking for. Travelling
outside of the major municpal areas is nowadays possible, but it's not very convenient
travelling - you'll spend days on rickety local buses into the hinterlands. And
then you'll just be in a smaller and less glorious copy of the huge metropolis
you've just left.
Nature calls
There are wilderness areas and unpopulated strips of countryside, but getting there
amounts to first heading through a bureaucratic jungle of unheard proportions and
spending a lot more money than you are probably willing to do.
Easy excursions into preserved areas that are relatively free of human occupation
can be made from Chengdu, where any number of local travel agents can arrange trips
to panda reservoirs and horseback rides in the western mountains of Sichuan.
